Nellie Duke oral history interview [sound recording], 1999 June 28.

Duke recalls her childhood in a small mill village outside of Rome, Georgia and describes how she became involved in social activism: by 1970 Duke was working for Carroll County's Senator Lamar R. Plunkett on early efforts to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. She recounts her involvement with a number of organizations such as the Council on Child Abuse, Family Connections, Women's Leadership Forum, the NAACP and the League of Women Voters.

Joyce Jenkins Durand was born in Ducktown, TN in 1939. She received a B.S. in elementary education, a master's of librarianship, and a Ph. D. in educational leadership. A Georgia native, Nellie D. Duke worked for the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
